BOOK REVIEW, VIEWS AND OPINIONS

BOOK REVIEW: TO EVERY MAN A BRAIN BY KENNY SALAMI (PART ONE)

One day, while roamingaboutt in the world called Instagram, I got a friend request, then a Dm and book connected with the author Kenny Salami. I went further to ask about his book and he answered me as follows “Its a book that stirs up your creativity and spurs you to be a productive thinker and not just a doer”

When I stated that it was a motivational book, he stated it was more because it had practical steps and methodology for innovation was embedded and this got me interested.

So I got a copy of the book and I was not disappointed.

I will be summarizing each of the 8 chapters before drawing a conclusion.

CHAPTER 1: MAN’S GREATEST GIFT OF ALL

In this chapter, we are made aware that of the 5 senses, sight is the greatest gift. This is because with the eyes the brain processes and the mind deciphers, and ideas are born. Depending on the mindset of the individual, interpretations of what the eye sees leads to choices being made as either

  1. Demolition where the mind takes what is seen as a crises situation for which there is no hope of resolution. The individual accepts the situation as it is, doing nothing to remedy it.
  2. Chaos where the mind decides and concludes that all is a mess.
  3. Potential where the mind decides that there is hope; assesses the situation and makes the best of it.

One’s interpretation is a result of how the brain has been trained to interpret one’s situation. The brain has to be trained or re-trained as it were, to stop seeing for the sake of seeing and start seeing possible innovations.

CHAPTER 2: FROM CHAOS TO ORDER

Okay, so this chapter is long and for good reason, as it breaks down 2 methodologies that the author presents as an aid to translate chains of chaos into baskets of opportunity. Namely DISRUPTION and OBSERVATION DAY, the author explained, with valid examples, were key actions to be taken in order to achieve the much needed and necessary outcomes.

  1. DISRUPTION: causing a disruption in the conventions that normally govern a market place an then using your idea to overturn said convention. In summary, you can provide a service or solution via an unconventional approach.
  2. OBSERVATION: based on the gift and power of sight, Man’s greatest gift. It involves taking time out of ones otherwise busy schedule to actually and SOLELY observe trends, nature, consumer or brand behavior, and their respective channel dynamics. This allows for insights that can initiate creativity and innovation as the brain interprets what it sees.

The author asks a crucial question – Is there a difference between creativity and innovation?

CREATIVITY

– the use of imagination or original ideas to create something new or different.

INNOVATION

– development of a new method, idea, product aimed at being a solution.

Their definitions speak volumes because while they are not the same, they are not entirely different and in many ways, actually work together.

Because of how much this book has to offer, I will not be doing one long review. This is part one of a two part review and summary.

Watch out for part 2!
